“¿Quien es el mejor?”

Normally, during our weekly study sessions, we pack the living room of the volunteer house with 20 pre-teens and teenagers every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Students come here to study for 2 hours, working with a special program on donated laptop computers - working to master skills in math and language arts. The kids are accustomed to this routine; they know they must enter the room, get their computers, and sit down and work. However, today was a special day, indeed.

When the kids entered the room, they were instructed to fold up the card tables that serve as their desks. They put chairs aside and sat on the couches and floor. On this special evening, we were joined again by our old friend; after everyone was settled, our guest walked in the door, none other than Don Agustino. Don Agus is well known as a professional photographer who worked for 22 years for Cruz Azul - one of the most important soccer teams of the Mexican professional league. Don Agus had the opportunity to travel and visit many stadiums around the world and took many pictures of futbol’s most famous players throughout Mexico and Europe. He is affectionately known by many of them as papa or tio...and he traveled all the way from Mexico to visit us.

For the two-hour time period that players normally spend working on computers, stretching their minds to their highest capacity, Don Agus delivered a rousing speech about his personal experience. He spoke about how futbol has changed his life, how taking advantage of each opportunity he has been given has led him to where he is today, and how he motivates fellow soccer players and lovers of the game.

About halfway through his speech, Don Agus called Luis Pablo - an eighth grader who has been with Immokalee Soccer School & Academy since its beginning - forward to share his personal experience with this extraordinary man, traveling throughout Europe and meeting professional soccer players. Luis confidently spoke from his heart, expressing what he learned from his travels abroad. He stressed the importance of working together as a team and of working hard to achieve your dreams.

Luis, however, is not the only player to have this unique opportunity. Don Agus was in town visiting from Mexico in order to give two players - Diego and Elmer - the opportunity of a lifetime. These two boys, in fact, had spent the earlier half of this day in Miami, meeting Jesus Corona and Nestor Araujo from Mexico’s National Team before their friendly match against Senegal. Diego stepped forward to tell his team about the “best day of [his] life.” The next day Jesus Corona call to let us know that between Nestor and him had 14 tickets for the game so we took 12 students to attend the friendly match in Miami, during which many saw a national team play for the first time - let alone from the home country of many players’ parents.

Just like Luis, Diego and Elmer, the rest of the middle-schoolers will embark on the adventure of a lifetime this March. During the middle-schoolers’ spring break, they will spend one week traveling through Mexico City, participating in cultural excursions, meeting the players of Cruz Azul - one of Mexico’s top professional teams - and, for most of them, flying in an international plane for the first time. As Luis Pablo shared his experience with fellow players, our greatest hope is that this trip provides a similar positive impact and learning experience for the players.

At the end of his speech, and after Luis, Diego, and Elmer had spoken, Don Agus had one question for the 20 kids staring back at him. Con ganas, he shouted, “¿Quien es el mejor?” “Who is the best?” to which each player shouted back “¡YO!” “ME!”

We are forever grateful to have experiences such as this one for our players here at ISSA. We hope that Don Agus serves as a constant reminder to work hard, to depend on our teammates, and to take advantage of the opportunities we are given. After all, this is the only way we can truly become el mejor!

Normalmente, durante nuestro estudio cada semana, la sala de uno de los voluntarios está llena de 20 jóvenes cada lunes, martes, jueves, y viernes. Los estudiantes vienen para estudiar por 2 horas, trabajando en un programa especial con computadoras donadas - aprendiendo a dominar las habilidades en matemáticas y gramática. Los jovenes estan acostumbrados a esta rutina; saben que necesitan entrar a la sala, sacar las computadoras, sentarse y estudiar. Sin embargo, hoy fue un dia especial.

Cuando los jóvenes entraron a la sala, se ordenaron para guardar las mesas y cuando estábamos listos, nuestro invitado entró - Don Agustino. Don Agus es conocido como fotógrafo profesional, quien trabajó por 22 años en uno de los equipos más importantes de la liga Mexicana (Cruz Azul) Don Agus tuvo la oportunidad de viajar y visitar muchos de los estadios alrededor del mundo tomando fotos a los mejores jugadores de fútbol en México y Europa. El es afectuosamente conocido por muchos de ellos como “papa” o “tio”...Don Agus viajó desde México para visitarnos.

Por las dos horas que usualmente usamos para el estudio, Don Agus nos dio un discurso basado sobre su experiencia personal. Hablo sobre como el fútbol ha cambiado su vida, como aprovecho las oportunidades que la vida le dio para llegar donde él está, con su experiencia a motivado a jugadores de fútbol y las personas que le encantan el fútbol.

En la mitad de su discurso, Don Agus llamó a Luis Pablo - un joven que está en su octavo nivel de escuela y ha estado con Immokalee Soccer School & Academy desde su inicio. En frente del equipo, Luis Pablo compartió su experiencia con este increíble hombre, Recordando el viaje por partes de Europa y conociendo jugadores profesionales. Luis habló con ganas y mucho cariño sobre su experiencia, diciendo a sus compañeros lo que aprendió sobre el trabajo en equipo y como trabajo para lograr sus sueños.

Sin embargo, Luis no fue el único jugador de ISSA en tener una oportunidad asi. Don Agus estaba visitando desde México para que dos jugadores - Diego y Elmer - tuvieran una oportunidad muy especial. Fueron a Miami durante la mañana para conocer a Jesús Corona y Néstor Araujo del equipo nacional de México. Diego dijo que fue “el mejor dia de su vida.” El siguiente día, recibimos una llamada de Jesús Corona donde entre él y Néstor tenían 14 boletos para el partido, doce estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de asistir al partido de México contra Senegal; para muchos fue la primera vez de ver un partido professional y también fue el equipo del país de muchos de sus padres.

Como las experiencias de Luis, Diego y Elmer, el resto del equip tiene la oportunidad de irlos a

la Ciudad de México durante sus vacaciones de la primavera en Marzo. Ellos van a participar en viajes culturales, conocer los jugadores de Cruz Azul, muchos de ellos viajar en un avión por primera vez. Nosotros deseamos que esta experiencia sea un impacto positivo para todos los jóvenes como la experiencia de Luis en el pasado.

Al fin de su discurso, Don Agus se preguntó a los jóvenes una sola pregunta: “¿Quién es el mejor?” Cada joven gritó, “¡YO!”

Somos muy agradecidos para las experiencias asi para los jugadores de ISSA. Deseamos que Don Agus pueda servir como un ejemplo para los jóvenes que puedan trabajar duramente, de apoyarse entre compañeros, y de aprovechar las oportunidades que tenemos. ¡Al fin, es la única manera de ser el mejor!
